I currently work for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a fish and wildlife biologist and am beginning a PhD in Ecology at the University of Georgia, studying freshwater fish and invertebrate conservation. The scholarship that I received from your Foundation 8 years ago was the reason I could afford to go to college, and also instilled a sense of confidence that I carry to this day. You selected me and believed in me, and that has enabled me to do very hard things, from internships to my master’s degree, even as I prepare to go to school yet again. I am so grateful to have been selected for this scholarship. Having the financial support of the foundation enabled me to attend a world-class Actuarial Science program and quickly find a job within the insurance industry. As a result, I have been so proud to help ensure the financial stability of my non-profit employer, which provides health insurance to those working as well as those in need through Medicare, Medicaid, and Dual Eligible programs. Outside of the classroom, I made countless memories as a member of the UConn Athletic Band program, performing for and traveling with our nationally recognized Men’s Basketball, Women’s Basketball, and Men’s Hockey teams. It was through this opportunity, playing in the UConn Pep Band, that I made several friends who I will be lucky to know closely for the rest of my life. After graduating from Johns Hopkins University, I moved to LA to teach high school math at a low-income school. I don’t think I would have been able to afford doing this if not for my minimal debt. Two years into teaching I pivoted to medical school. My pathway in medicine has been largely influenced by my time teaching. I was recognized by Compton Unified School District as a distinguished partner and worked with many high school students from underserved backgrounds to pursue medicine. I think my time teaching, and the opportunity to do so because of my minimal debt, largely impacted my ability to pursue this path.
